Dental Lumineers Vs Traditional Veneers

Dental veneers can address a number of cosmetic issues. Whether teeth are chipped, cracked, discolored, disproportionate, misaligned, or unevenly spaced, veneers can conceal these imperfections and complement your entire smile.

However, traditional veneers require the removal of enamel from the entire front surface of a tooth. Lumineers®, a variety of veneers offered by Drs. Dr. Pramod Thomas, Wilner Loiseau, and Melliza George, are exceptionally thin veneers that can require little or no alteration. When you visit our Richardson, TX, practice, we can help determine which type of veneer is right for you.

Lumineers Richardson TX

Lumineers are a minimal-prep alternative to porcelain veneers that can provide your smile with a dramatic enhancement.

What Are the Advantages?

Lumineers offer several benefits that other types of dental veneers cannot offer:

    • They are exceptionally thin. Dental veneers cover the front surfaces of teeth. The thicker the veneers, the more enamel the dentist must remove to ensure a natural-looking, attractive fit. Lumineers are approximately 0.30 millimeters thick, while traditional veneers are about 0.50 mm. In fact, dentists often do not need to remove any tooth enamel prior to Lumineers placement.
    • They have lifelike translucence. Tooth enamel has a natural translucence that makes teeth reflect light in a certain way. Lumineers capture this quality to look virtually indistinguishable from natural dental tissue.
    • They are strong. Leucite-reinforced ceramics are used to construct Lumineers. This material offers exceptional strength that allows Lumineers to last 20 years or longer.
    • They are reversible. Because traditional veneers require alteration of the tooth, this means the tooth will always require some kind of restoration. Lumineers, on the other hand, can be removed without having to be replaced.

Who Are Good Candidates?

Our doctors carefully evaluate each patient to determine his or her candidacy. In general, patients must have a few fundamental smile and health characteristics in order to qualify for Lumimeers:

    • No existing dental health problems: Issues such as gum disease and tooth decay must be treated prior to the placement treatment.
    • Smile imperfections correctable: Not all smile imperfections can be corrected by Lumineers. In some cases, thicker dental veneers or another cosmetic dentistry service is a better choice.
    • Patient compliance: Patients who receive this treatment should be willing to maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine. With time, the pieces can become stained, discolored, cracked, chipped, and dislodged without proper care.

Lumineers Placement

Once it has been confirmed that you can receive veneers, you should anticipate making two visits to our office to have them placed.

During the first visit, the dentist will take detailed impressions and measurements of the teeth. Additionally, the patient and dentist will choose the correct shade to match the rest of the smile. This precise data will be sent to a special laboratory to produce each individual  Lumineer.

At the second appointment, the dentist will test each Lumineer before bonding it in place using a special adhesive. Once bonded, they will be polished and shined to maximize their brilliance and translucence.

What makes a good Lumineer?

Good dental Lumineers are made of high-quality ceramic material and will look and feel like natural tooth enamel. They can also be made in any shade from light to dark.

Do they hurt?

No, but they can be uncomfortable while applying them. The process involves creating an impression of your teeth and then taking a mold to fabricate the ceramic veneer. Your dentist will apply a protective coating over the veneer to protect it.

Can dental Lumineers be taken out and replaced?

Yes, they are very durable and designed to last a lifetime.
